If you have ADHD, there's a good chance that you share my hyperfixation with statistics, numbers, and the art of tracing patterns between various things and selected groups, especially when comparing data between countries and regions.
So, I want to share that I am super hyper delighted to know that Substack provides statistics about who is reading and subscribing to our blog by region!
At this exact moment, after a little less than four months of blogging, we have 39 posts and readers across 39 countries and also 39 U.S. states.
Someone once said that there's no coincidence in life! These numbers are very special to me because this blog is a project I finally launched after a huge amount of procrastination. I spent more than a year planning, thinking, and immersed in fear about whether I could deliver something nice to you. The final words are yours, of course, but these numbers show that despite the many improvements we need to make, the articles and topics covered are generally heading in a nice direction.
To be fair, maintaining this blog is a massive investment of my time and effort, which is why I've opened the possibility for you to opt for a paid subscription. I'm extremely absolutely grateful to the few who are supporting me financially at this moment. Those special subscribers can access the full archive of articles and will soon receive firsthand resources about managing ADHD, which I am finishing right now. Nevertheless, you are more than welcome to choose the free subscription, which allows you to read articles published in the last four weeks and be the first to receive our new entries in your email of choice.
Returning to the blog statistics, this is a real celebration of my hyperfocus, and I could spend the whole day diving into the sea of data provided. But I’ll save you from my poor summarization skills and separate the main topics for you:
From the 39 countries represented by our readers, these are where the largest share comes from:
- 61% from the United States
- 9% from the United Kingdom
- 7% from Canada
- 5% from Australia
- 3% from the Netherlands
- 2% from France
- 2% from Germany
- 2% from Vietnam
- 2% from India
Unfortunately, the platform does not provide more specific data such as subdivisions and cities within most countries. As expected, more than 8 out of 10 of our readers come from countries where English is spoken as a native language. But I'm trying to improve my French to post something especially for our Canadian and French readers, after all, this is an international alliance!
Maybe to the fact Substack is located in the United States, it can provide a little more information about our subscribers here:
Our readers are dispersed across 39 states, among them:
- 12% in California
- 7% in Texas
- 7% in Illinois
- 6% in New York
- 6% in Michigan
- 5% in Washington
- 5% in Arizona
- 4% in Pennsylvania
- 4% in Colorado
- 4% in Florida
- 4% in Maryland
- 3% in Utah
- 3% in Massachusetts
- 3% in Indiana
- 3% in Connecticut
- 2% in Virginia
- 2% in Minnesota
- 2% in Georgia
- 2% in Missouri
- 2% in North Carolina
However, this roughly reflects the population weight of each state, as more people usually mean a larger share of readers. These are the winners according to the proportion of readers of our blog adjusted to the population of each state (readers per 100,000 people):
1. Utah: 1.46 readers/100,000 people
2. Connecticut: 1.39
3. Colorado: 1.02
4. Maryland: 0.97
5. Arizona: 0.94
6. Washington: 0.89
7. Illinois: 0.88
8. Michigan: 0.80
9. Indiana: 0.73
10. Massachusetts: 0.71
11. Minnesota: 0.70
12. Missouri: 0.65
California has a proportion of 0.51 readers per 100,000 people and Texas 0.39, so even though they reign in absolute terms, it's not the case relatively!
Worth mentioning that the collection of data doesn't seem to be perfectly accurate, but it didn't show readers in 11 U.S. states:
- Wyoming
- North Dakota
- New Mexico
- Arkansas
- Mississippi
- Wisconsin
- Iowa
- West Virginia
- Vermont
- Maine
- Rhode Island
If you're from one of these states, please send us a shoutout and subscribe to this blog so your state will be represented!
In all cases, I couldn't be more thankful for each and every one of you who subscribe to this humble initiative, who believe in my potential, and who find here a chance to gain knowledge.
Thank you for your patience and time in each one of the 39 states and each one of the 39 countries you live in!
Thanks to you, 39 will be my new lucky number from now on!
I like numbers too. It's a nice way to see the progress from when you started to now and wonder "Wow, I did that? I reached this many people?"
Although for me sometimes I can obsess over them too much and forget that I got to produce stuff for the subscribers to read...
